Outline of the Karematsuzawa Zuido Tunnel

To transport tailings generated at the Kamaishi Mine to the Karematsuzawa Storage Site, the Karematsuzawa Zuido tunnel was built to link the concentration site in Ohashi with the storage site in Karematsuzawa. Mining of the tunnel started in November 1973. The tunnel was completed in May 1975 and placed in service in 1977. The tunnel is 5,178 meters long from north to south, 9 meters high at the highest part, 3 meters high at the lowest part and up to 9 meters wide at the widest part (3 meters wide on average). As removal of a belt conveyor and other machinery left in the tunnel was completed in August 2014, the tunnel is now available for other uses.
